18/06/92 - WESTFALENHALLE,
DORTMUND Summary
by Bryan King: 1992 will go down as one of BA's busiest in terms of his touring
schedule. With the exception of a few weeks off in early January, late May, and
September, the band was touring around the world successfully promoting the Waking
up the Neighbours CD. This show in Dortmund, Germany
is the 13th concert out of a 36 city tour through Europe in the Summer of '92.
While many of the summer dates in UK and Europe were in large outdoor venues holding
anywhere from 20-70,000 fans, this sold-out gig in Dortmund was one of the smaller
venues with a capacity 12,000. The BA is absolutely
huge around the world and is it at this time his popularity was still growing
in countries such as Germany based on the success of the Everything I Do... single
and the WUTN album. Germany's loyatly to BA continues to this day based on his
superb CDs and live performances from the late 80's and early '90's. This show
in Dortmund is a classic example of the type of shows that cemented BA's reputation
as a live performer. He still had to earn his audience's loyalty and respect and
delivered night after night during the summer of '92.
This
show is one of the first that utilitizes the now infamous BStage; a smaller stage
at the back of the venue that was used at most BA shows from summer '92 until
1997. While after a number of gigs, fans knew the Bstage was coming and it wasn't
such a "surprise" anymore. But at this show, it was a total shock and
had maximum effect for a delighted audience. The ending of this show is like
none I've ever seen before with BA walking off the stage as the audience sings
"When the Night Comes" over and over again. They keep singing after
BA's left the stage and then the house lights come up. Not a satisfying ending,
but that's the way it happened on this night. A higher-than-average
song count of 24 features some very nice twists to the summer set lists which
didn't offer much in terms of variety to anyone catching more than one show. In
Dortmund, while the standard structure of the WUTN summer dates is in tact, BA
digs deep into the obscurity files for a completely ad-libbed version of Jealousy.
Other highlights during the set include the newly-added All I Want Is You, the
sometimes-played Lonely Nights and a slightly re-arranged Heat of the Night. Heat
is dropped from the set lists for the larger venues on the WUTN tour, so BA takes
advantage of this arena gig by playing it for one of the last times until the
tour comes to the US in the Fall of '92. While All I Want Is You will remain in
most BA set lists for the next five years, this is one of the first times the
song is performed live. The set list also features
a rare pairing of Do I Have to Say the Words (usually played earlier in the set)
and One Night Love Affair, which has been a regular in the encores from way back
to 1984. It is one of the first times ONLA ends up in the main set - where it
will remain for the next five years. The Bstage features
three songs including one of an early BA version of Can't Judge a Book by Looking
at the Cover. Straight From the Heart is dropped
and replaced with When The Night Comes to close the show. Setlist:
