07/07/94 - VELLODROMO ANOETA, SAN SEBASTIAN

Review by Spanish Newspaper (translated by Ana):
Kids Wanna Rock

Ten thousand enthusiasts at the *donostiarra concert of Bryan Adams and Texas. The triple rocker date of the last thursday at *Donostia was a massive party that delighted to all the youth who were there. Aussies Jimmy Barnes did it well, we were amazed by the experience of Texas and Canadian Bryan Adams held the public in awe.

*donostiarra comes from Donostia which is the name of San Sebastián in Euskera, the Vasque Country language.

It wasn’t 8pm yet when a multicolour and ordered queue winded to Anoeta’s velodrome surrounding the north exterior circle of the stadium. It was sure the stadium was going to be full and many people didn’t wasn’t to skip the supporting act. It happened to be Australian Jimmy Barnes and his quartet. Barnes is tough, sweaty, loud-voiced and reliable. He and the group played old rock songs and it was obvious when they started to play song by Rolling Stones, Ike and Tina Turner, etc. The not-so-squashed-yet first row thanked the effort.

Texans of Glasgow

When thousands of mad member of the audience reply to the first chord of a group with an enthusiastic roar, the thing is quite clear. That happened to the Scottish Texas. They were not there to be a support act but to be a band prepare to “eat” the immense place. It’s said about them they are more popular and known at the south side of the Pyrenees than at their own country. They have played before in Vasque Country and their popularity keeps growing. That thursday night was a witness that such a fervour is not exaggerated.

Their vocalist Sharleen Spiteri is just a few inches tall but she has charm, moreover, an excellent voice. Also, guitarist and spine of the band, Ally McErlaine is very young. He combs himself with the same style as his compatriots “Faces” in the 60’s. He burns or cares, depending on the occasion, his guitar. They told story after story of new loves, lovers and break-up’s. They said goodbye asking for a pray for themselves and with some well pronounced swearwords in Spanish. Excellent concert.

Summer of ‘94

One of the most known songs of Bryan Adams says Kids wanna rock and he is in charged of giving it with abundance and generosity. Almost three hours of concert accompanied with an exceptional guitarist and other three great musicians. Black jeans and white t-shirt for a very classic but pleasant show.
T-shirts, sanfermineros’ shawls, balloons… were given as presents to Adams. He invited to sing with him to a boy from the first row called Asier who said of himself that was from *Euskadi and owner of a great voicem as well as knowing some chorus in English.

* Esukadi is the euskera name of The Vasque Country.

Bryan is pure energy doing R&R and has loads of feeling when he plays his most known ballads. He is not the hurricane Springsteen nor the fall-in-love-with-me Rod Stewart in his young years, but almost.

A cocky boy very natural

The privileged first rows were stunned when during the encore, Bryan Adams and his guys didn’t appear on the main stage but at the bottom of the Velodrome, on a small stage among the audience. The human wave of people turned around and the privilege was then for the people behind. It was the closest moment of the night. Everything sounded perfectly and the Canadian left apart his own songs to perform old ones as C’mon Everybody, Wild thing and Little Red Rooster.
Adams climbed up the drums, or *fight with his guitar man with a sanfermin’s shawl, that seemed an authentic friends party. It was the furthest thing from stardom you can expect from a music star. The party was over when the musicians shared their mini-stage with some spectators.
Good boy from Ontario.

*the original said “torear” which is what the bullfighter does with the bull.
