08/02/99 - THE JOINT, HARD
ROCK HOTEL, LAS VEGAS, NV Review by Chris Mirell: The
next day I flew to Las Vegas and again headed straight for the venue. When I arrived
I met Jane Beaton and a few others. The sound check had just begun. They were
rehearsing I'm Ready, and then they did I'm a Liar! I was so happy to hear that!
The fnaclub tix were there this time with no problems. When we were let in we
rushed to the stage, and made it right in front of Bryan again. The guitar tech
came out again and taped lyrics to the floor, this time putting the full lyrics
to I'm a liar at the base of Bryan and Keith's mikes! He came out with a black
pen and crossed out "I'm a" from the whole thing. He said Bryan said
it was too confusing. The show started about 8:30, and opened with summer of 69.
During the show Bryan smiled at me a few times, and at one point he pointed to
the lyrics of I'm a liar with his boot and grinned. I tossed him a thumbs up,
and when they played I'm a liar, Bryan screwed up the lyrics a few times. All
of us (including Keith) were laughing at him, but it still sounded great. SET
LIST: It was pretty much the same as San Diego, though he played I'm A Liar, I
Fought the Law, and I'm Ready. He did not play She's Only Happy... or Cmon Everybody. Bryan
only signed a few autographs after the show, then left. We circled around back
and found the tourbus. Mickey came out and talked to us for about 10 min, signing
autographs and taking pics. He said they would probably tour the festivals in
Europe this summer, and maybe do a full US tour in the fall. He siad it depended
on how the album did when rereleased. He also said that Bryan has it in his head
that no one likes him in the US anymore. He said these little shows are good,
because its good for bryan to see the US audience (and trust me, both audiences
went wild for him). Bryan came out and didnt look too happy to see us. He looked
tired and said he would stay for a minute, because he didnt want to catch pneumonia
in the wind. He came over to me, said Hi chris and shook my hand. I thanked him
for playing I'm a liar and he said he fucked it up. I told him it was fine! Then
he went back into the hotel, all of us following, and walked right into the casino
and sat down at a blackjack table. Next to no one recognized him! We left him
alone then, as I could tell he was getting a little pissed and needed his space. All
in all both shows were fantastic! ********** Review
by Bulldog: Ass Whuppin' Show in Las Vegas Monday Night In
my 25 years or so of going to RnR concerts I was trying to come up with a better
3 man performance than I witnessed on Monday night in LV by BA and the boys. Nope.
Couldn't. They put on a 2 hour, stripped down, ass whuppin', roof raising, toe
tappin, old fashioned Rock and Roll show that even BA neophytes would have appreciated.
They came in their all white garments to baptize the congregation in the lake
of anthem rock fire. No ballads here, (well, "Heaven" but not as fluffy
as the original) but a good mix of old and new: "Summer of '69, "Back
to You", It's Only Love", "Getaway" "On a Day Like Today"
"Cuts Like a Knife", "The Only Thing That Looks Good on Me..",
"Somebody" to name but a few. The new songs
lent themselves to the bare bones approach wherein Bryan (playing bass) essentially
executed on this night at the Hard Rock's "Joint" the antithesis, if
you will, of his unplugged shows. It takes a skillful craftsman to embellish songs
with different arrangements and added instrumentation as he did for his late '97
release of "Unplugged" ; But as a closet musician myself, I know it
takes at least an equal dose of talent to transform complex studio tunes into
3- instrument bare bones versions that seem to actually come to a new and energized
life when performed live. I have been a casual fan of Bryan's from the beginning
but have only begun to really appreciate his gift of late, so I was surprised
on a number of fronts: His solid bass playing for one, his seemingly effortless
vocals, Keith Scott's extremely versatile (simultaneous) rhythm AND solo guitar
work and Mickey Curry's frugal but driving percussion. Through the encores of
the classic "I Fought the Law" to a thunderous finale of "Kids
Wanna Rock" Bryan's show was a rarity these days: A fun time and an incredible
entertainment value for what amounts to chump change. How do I feel tonight? Just
grand thanks to BA and the boys! God Bless 'em!! p.s. He announced they are
re-releasing "On a Day Like Today" so buy one for a friend so it will
re-chart somewhere higher than last time (#103) ********** Soundcheck: Getaway Setlist: Summer
