24/05/99 - JURGEN KLINSMANN FAREWELL MATCH, GOTTLIEB DAIMLER STADION, STUTTGART

Review by Maria Heutz:
First of all I have to tell you that I’ve been the manager of the Jürgen Klinsmann’s fan club for some years. Jürgen has been my favourite football player for many years. He invited me and all the fan club’s members to his farewell match which took place on Whitsun in Stuttgart. He also had invited (for me?) Bryan to play at half time.
On the one hand I was totally sad because Jürgen would end his career and I couldn’t go to watch him play anymore. Never again I could admire his extraordinary qualities on the field, celebrate his goals, I had to wind up the fan club…
And then at half time Jürgen announced HIM!! Two days before I sat down next to the radio to listen to a live radio transmission of Bryan’s concert at the Rock am Ring/Rock im Park festival and had to wait hours and hours for this.
Bryan came on stage - with sunglasses - and Mickey and Keith. People were surprised about the only three piece band. They started with When you’re gone followed by The only thing that looks good on me is you and Cloud # 9, simply wonderful and of course a bit too short. I wondered because in the newspapers was announced that he will perform Summer of ’69 but he didn’t.
At the end of the match Jürgen took the microphone and said Good bye under tears. Not only was he crying!!! Once again he welcomed Bryan and hugged him. Then Bryan played without his band’s support an acoustic improvised live version of the expected Summer of 69 which is Jürgen’s favourite song because his wife is born in that summer. After this Bryan performed some lines of 18 til I die. I think he did this because of Jürgen’s shirt’s number.
I can’t describe my feelings, they were too mixed, but Bryan’s show made me a bit happier at the end.
Another good news in the stadium was the announcement on the barrier that there will be more concerts in July. Aachen and also Bonn is very close to where I live and I bought a ticket for Bryan’s show in Aachen just when I was back home again.
As I read later in the newspapers it hasn’t been sure that Bryan would have played also at the end of the match. Just five minutes before the kick off Jürgen asked him to do this. Bryan had to decline because he couldn’t stay any longer. His plane to London couldn’t wait. Furthermore there were some problems. Because of technical reasons Bryan had to play some parts of his songs through playback and he hadn’t brought with him other music. So Jürgen asked him what he has with and Bryan answered: “Only my guitar. Get me a Lear jet to London and I will play again.” This wasn’t a problem because Bryan got a place in Mr. Sugar’s (Tottenham Hotspurs) plane to London later that evening.
After his performance at the end of the game he asked whether everything was okay which made people shaking their heads. You and I know that everything he does is okay. Isn’t it?

Bryan performed a few songs at halftime and fulltime of the Jurgen Klinsmann farewell game infront of a packed football stadium.
