02/06/99 - BALEARIC COLISEO, PALMA, MAJORCA

Review by Fernando Marino - Spanish Newspaper (translated by Ana):
“I’m not driven by the desire of achieving fame” - Canadian Bryan Adams performs tonight at the Palma’s “Plaza de toros” (bullring)

The “On a day like today” tour arrives to Palma and we will finally have the chance to listen live the new Bryan Adams’ album, these 14 tracks from ’98 which made fashionable the rusky voice again. At 10pm, the “Coliseo Balear” (Balear’s coliseum) will welcome one of the candidates to be recognised as owner of the most shivering and intimate live of this season.

There is no doubt that the teenagers and not so teens will move their asses to listen songs as “I’m a liar”, “Getaway”, “How do you feel tonight” or “C’mon, c’mon, c’mon”. If we add an spectacular conception of live performance, everybody should go even if it is just for curiosity.

The fact is that we are before a great album and it’s worth to see it live. The album was released October 19th -it was recorded in Vancouver and in Jamaica between June and August ’98- and it’s the first one Adams records at his own studio. Bob Rock -Metallica- helped him with the production. “On a day like today” is an album which saw the light soon after that greatest hits called “MTV Unplugged” in which Bryan Adams complied some of his hits with new arrangements. He was happy with the result.

Live album

“I’ve been asked for it many times during the past 10 years”, says Bryan “bu I always thought it wasn’t the right moment”. That was a job ordered by MTV -it was recorded in London, September 23rd 1997- in the same line as the ones carried out by Nirvana and Eric Clapton.
The advantage of the Unplugged is the spontaneity that exudes its content and the basuc idea which determined the selection as well. The first single of the new album, the track gives name to the record, was composed by Adams soon after the recording of the acoustic album. Writing is for Adams “like an exorcism: I am able to say things which I wouldn’t usually talk about”.

“The selection of the setlist was made trying to combine classic tracks, old repertory and some new tracks”, the singer explains. Those new songs are “Back to you”, “When you love someone” and “A little love”. If you are reading this early, you are in time to listen those 27 tracks hold between the two albums; hum the ones you know the most, try the consistency of you ankles, comb yourself and go out to the meeting with the best feelings at the bullring. If by the other hand, you are not too convinced listen to Bryan: “It’s not the desire of obtaining fame or celebrity which moves me. I suppose that once more, I’ve tried to record an album which has a smooth, easy and pleasant listening from the beginning until the end”.

If you are a film lover, perhaps you are lucky and you find he has decided, just for tonight, to include his Oscar’s nominees tracks. Supposing this, you will enjoy with “Everything I do - I do it for you”, “Have you ever really loved a woman” and “I finally found someone”, although I must point out Adams can’t be bothered, generally. There was an attempt to include on the “MTV Unplugged” the song for the Robin Hood’s film but the idea was ruled out. “It’s not that I wanted to separate my work for the film industry from the rest of my career, but a version of “EID” with my voice and a cello seemed to me like a funeral march”.
