18/07/99 - KATSCHHOF, AACHEN

Review by Maria Heutz:
I arrived at the venue around 16 o’clock and there were already maybe 30 people waiting. It was very hot and we stood in the sun until the gate opened at 18. I ran as fast as I could even it wasn’t allowed. The security men told us about again and again. When we found our places we had to sit down. There was a second barrier not far away from the one which took away people from stage. So everyone got enough space and wasn’t hemmed in like usually. I feared about my white trousers on the cobbles, but they were okay as I later found out at home again.
First when I took my place I looked around. What an impressive place Bryan had chosen for this open-air concert. The venue was very small between residential buildings and business premises on the right and left side. Behind the stage there was the cathedral of Aachen and in the back there was the city hall. All around in the windows there were people who later followed the concert. Simply an unique scenery!
We sat in the sun in hot temperatures again. It seemed that the audience was very tired. No wonder with this summer weather. Bryan came on stage punctually at 20. He started with Is there anybody out there” In my opinion this isn’t the best choice for an opener but he sure awaked us and the party begun. First I thought Bryan is only full concentrated in singing but he wasn’t. He took notice of everything that happened around. He flirted with the women in the windows next to the stage and communicated a lot with the audience. He was in a very good mood and the atmosphere was simply perfect. Back to you, 18 til I die and Can’t stop this thing we started was already played when he said: “Guten Abend meine Damen und Herren (good evening ladies and gentlemen) and hello to the pope (this was for people watching him from the windows of the city hall). Which one of you is the pope?” Somebody from the crowd yelled and Bryan continued: “Not you, up there. You wanna wave to the pope? Now is the chance, say hello…. My name is Bryan and on the drums I have Mickey Curry, on the lead guitar and vocal Mr. Keith Scott.
After this they played Summer of ’69 and It’s only love. When he began with the first tones of (Everything I do) I do it for you he meant: “Can you hear this, can the pope hear this?” The next song was Getaway and a girl threw a package of spaghetti on stage. Bryan picked it up and said: “I wanna thank my Italian friends for coming tonight because they brought me some pasta. Is it the best pasta? Or is it just regular table pasta? Can you cook? Can you clean? Cos I’m looking for somebody. I wanna dedicate this song to you bella signorita (Italian for beautiful lady).” Have you ever really loved a woman followed by I don’t wanna live forever and Cuts like a knife. During that song he divided the audience in two parts. People on the right side should sing the “na, na, na, nas” for Keith and the others for Bryan. Unfortunately Keith has won. The crowd on his side was much louder. Then we listened to When you’re gone.
Once again he has watched his audience exactly. He saw some men in the windows at his left side and he asked: “What are you doing up there? Is that the police station or what?” And in German: “Was ist das?” To a couple in a window of a higher floor: “Hey what are you two doing up there? What’s going up there? Is she your wife?” He played some tunes of Heaven and continued speaking: “That’s not your wife! Who is it?” Someone: “My sister!” Bryan: “I enjoy this atmosphere, it’s quiet fantastic. It’s not every day that we get to play in an outdoor festival like this. Whatever this is … square.” To the couple: “Can I get up there later? Not with you (to the pasta girl)! You cook pasta! I later come back eat, okay?” To the woman of the couple again: “Why do you blow me kisses when it’s him? Blow him kisses!” Heaven followed and the blues jam which was my absolute favourite that evening. He played it different. I hadn’t heard it like that before. It was so great. First he sang some “rrrrrr” and asked: “Can you hear me?” and louder again. “Can you hear me?” Some parts he sang with a woman’s voice, he got angry with himself and called himself Big BA. I loved it completely and it was so fantastic. The two last songs were The only thing that looks good on me is you and Cloud # 9. He told us he is Bryan Adams, Mickey Curry on the drums and Keith Scott on lead guitar. “We thank you very very much. Dankeschön”.
We of course yelled out for an encore and we got it. Run to you, Please forgive me, On a day like today and Kids wanna rock. Then the concert was over. All in all he only had played for one and an half hour. Maybe he didn’t feel that good. He obviously had a cold. People threw tissues on stage during the gig but Bryan preferred to use his t-shirt instead of tissues. Also he often sneezed and took probably some medicine/a pill because he got something in a cup to drink from a woman from back of the stage.
