24/07/99 - ALTON TOWERS, STAFFORDSHIRE
Review by Steven
Stanley:
This was my first ever outdoor concert of BA and after seeing him
for the first time back in '97 a 2 year gap until my next BA gig
seemed like such a long time so I was really hyped up for this gig.
It was also the first time I saw the then newly formed 'trio' band
with without usual stalwarts Dave Taylor (bass) and Tommy Mandel
(keyboards)...I didn't really know what to expect but they sure
did sound good!
Anyway we headed off for the venue
in the early morning with my friend Mike
and his parents who were taking us there. It was an amazingly hot
sunny day and we eventually got there (very hard to find!). When
we did get there loads of people were already queuing and it was
only just dinnertime. We heard 'Space' the support band doing their
soundcheck and got talking to a few fans. I turned out that if you
were in the actual theme park you got inside the gig first...not
fair! We didn't rush inside anyway when we got in because everybody
was made to sit down before the gig. As soon as everyone got up
though I managed to get my first ever front row position :) It was
well to the right of the stage but I didn't care! Space were soon
on singing and they weren't bad actually...then we waited for Bryan
and the band.
Suddenly I was looking to the right
of the stage and I saw in the distance 3 people walking down to
the stage all dressed in white. I had been looking at the recent
setlists on the internet and I was expecting him to start with 'Summer
Of '69' but then the background music to 'How Do Ya Feel Tonight'
started really loud! The 3 people turned out to be Bryan, Keith
and Mickey and as they got closer to the stage they were surrounded
by the security guards.
Then Bryan's voice was played..."IS
THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE?"...for all the rest of the crowd who
weren't sure what was happening before that confirmed it for them....they
all answered with a resounding 'YEEESS!!!' Then Bryan ran past everyone
to the stage "IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE?"....Alton Towers
errupted and Bryan played a very raw loud version of the song...sounded
much more powerful with the trio than I expected! Then straight
after they played 'Back To You'...a song that to this day is my
favourite live...well after '69 of course maybe. Everybody was bouncing
up and down. I was taping the show at the same time. Later on he
played the first verse and chorus of 'On A Day Like Today' because
the sun setting across the park inspired him to do so!

Some woman threw some underwear at
him and he said "I can tell you right now those aren't mine!"
He kept askin why we weren't on the rides as well! The new song
'Cloud #9' was also a big highlight and it was amazing live...Bryan
ended the show with 'Kids Wanna Rock'...which is how everyshow should
be ended!
Straight after the last song and
after the bows, BA jumped off the stage and down onto the front
row towards me! We was shaking all the crowd hands down to the right
hand side of the stage where I was stood! He came over to me and
shook my hand ...i SAID "see ya in Sheffield Bry"....he
replied"sure will!"...... UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Overall a gig
that rocked in a nice venue, I would definately go to see him there
again. There were absolutely thousands of people there...I don't
think there was enough room really, people were standing on top
of burger vans and everything...people were even watchin all the
way back at the turnstiles in the end because they couldn't get
close. People that kept going over head in the cable cars though
would have been disapointed becuse when BA came on they stopped
running haha cheapskates!

REVIEW OF SOUND EQUIPMENT FOR THE GIG
Pop sensation, Bryan Adams, appeared for one day
on July 24th at the Alton Towers arena in Staffordshire. Providing
the Meyer Sound self-powered loudspeaker system for the concert
event was Canegreen of London who supplied 3 MSL-6s, 5 DS-2Ps and
10 MSL-4s on either side of the stage, with 8 650-Ps situated under
each of the flown systems.
"While testing the system we found that the coverage was good
in all areas of the arena," said Yan Stile of Canegreen. "Both
the organizer and promoter's representative were present when we
ran the system up and both commented on how good the Spl, range
and coverage were throughout the venue.
Designing the PA for the one-day concert event was
Andrew Frengley of Canegreen and Tony Zabo, sound technician for
the Bryan Adams tour.
