13/11/99 - HOVET, STOCKHOLM
Review by Martin:
This was the gig I probably would have missed if hadn't read the
paper one morning and with sleepy eyes noticed a little note that
said 'Bryan Adams, Nov 13, Hovet'.
At that time I had no access to the Internet and to be honest didn't
keep up with BA as much as I do nowadays. So if I hadn't read the
paper that morning I probably wouldn't have bothered to get the
information elsewhere.
I got my ticket alright and didn't really think much about it. Was
looking forward to
seeing livemusic of course and a good saturday night out but the
true passion just wasn't there.
I went to the gig all by myself since I couldn't get anyone alse
to come along. I don't mind going solo at all though so that wasn't
a problem.
I had a standing ticket since the seats were sold out but decided
(just like I would three years later on) to try and see if I could
get a seat that wasn't taken.
Thankfully I did.
Anyway I read a short review about BA's gig in Gothenburg the night
before so I knew they were now a three-piece. Didn't know what to
expect and it felt a bit strange I must say.
The opening act was the Canadian group Barenaked Ladies. Not widely
known I guess but they put on a good show and did a good job entertaining
and warming up the audience.
For their big hit 'If I Had A Million Dollars' near the end of the
set the singer gave the crowd a chance to sing along. That was really
charming. The frontrow ladies did a pretty good job there. Last
number of the set was a humorous medley of all the popular 'radiosongs'
at that time including 'The Bad Touch' (Bloodhound Gang) and 'Hit
Me Baby One More Time' (Britney Spears).
It was really funny stuff.
BA came on about an hour later. The boys all clean and all in white
started off with 'How Do Ya Feel Tonight' and continued with the
standard 24-song set of the tour.
It took about 4-5 songs to get the crowd going and I remember BA
at one point of the show asking to turn the lights on one part of
the audience saying 'Hey you people over there.. erm.. have you
met this people over here?' pointing to the other end of the arena.
When he wasn't getting any loud response he went 'Oh..you don't
like them?'
:)
It was a bit of a struggle finding a proper woman to do 'When You're
Gone'. They had to do the song 4 times! That's right. Four.
#Woman 1. If I remember correctly the first lady he picked didn't
even make it to the stage. I guess she was to shy or scared to go
on.
#Woman 2. Oh boy hehe, she was really something else! She got picked
and confidently made her way to the stage. Obviously nervous but
in a good mood she got on stage and then the whole circus began.
When BA wanted to have a little chat with her she.. I dunno.. maybe
it was nerves, the fear of speaking english or just impatience but
after awhile she just kept going 'Kom igen då..vi kör!'(translation
'C'mon, let's do it') in Swedish! Bloody hell hehe. At first we
thought it was funny just nerves but after a good while it got annoying.
BA kept telling her as polite as possible that he don't speak Swedish
and just wanted a little chat with her before the song. Adams slowly
got impatient and we soon figured out that this was not going to
happen. Not with this woman.
#Woman 3. They started the song but for some reason which I couldn't
tell BA decided to end the song after just one verse and decided
to pick yet another girl.
#Woman 4. Finally. After all the hassle with finding a proper person
to sing with this young girl hit the spot. Sofia was nice, relaxed,
good looking and confident on stage.
They ended the song and she got a well deserved standing ovation
from the Stockholm crowd.
Really good.
All in all an OK gig I guess. I left with a bit of a dissapointed
feeling though. I tried hard to put it out but of all the gigs i've
seen with BA this was the one I liked less.
