08/02/02 - HOVET, STOCKHOLM

Review by Martin:
Had heard rumours through the grapevine that BA was coming to town just months before the show. The Scandinavian dates were announced and the very day the tickets were available I got myself one! I went to the gig with my classmate Jennifer who was looking forward to it as much as I was. I also arranged to meet up with Lisa and her sister outside the venue about 2 hours prior to the gates were opened. The last thing I did before I set off to Hovet was reading a review (in Danish) about the gig the night before in Copenhagen and after that I was ready for action.

I arrived at about 4 pm. There were about five people or so queuing. Time went by pretty quick as I had a nice chat with Lisa. About 6 pm I met up with Jennifer at the tube went for a McDonalds and then started the serious queuing as more and more people arrived. Our classmate Karin, her brother with girlfriend soon joined us waiting outside.. you should have seen the look on people's faces when we waved at them to come join us hehe! The atmosphere among everybody was amazing and a group of girls even sang an acapella version of 'Straight From The Heart'. Stunning. Beautiful. I guess that was the last sign I needed to know that this was gonna be a great evening.

The gates opened anyway and in we went. Mad running along those who wanted go front row (Lisa and her sis ended up second row I think good job!) Jennifer and I decided early on that we would rather go for places in the seats. Being front row isn't really my style. Before we took our seats we took a little walk and I bought a t-shirt and the tourprogramme (which was freakin expensive and didn't really have anything else but pictures to be honest!). We made some jokes about the price I just payed and took our seats.

At 7.30 pm the opening act Pushjkins (Swedish group from Linköping). If Lisa hadn't told me before the show about them I wouldn't have had a clue. I qoute her 'They're not worthy of being opening act for Bryan'. Well, yeah I can't argue there really. Having seen class opening acts as Pretenders 94, Melissa Etheridge 96 and the entertaining Barenaked Ladies in 99 I can honestly that this was pure rubbish! They did about 30 mins and then left the stage.

After some more waiting at 8.37 pm it happened. Lights out. Cheering from the Stockholm crowd. The sound of an acoustic guitar. Spotlight on and there he was. BA. 'I've been down, I've been beat'.. show was underway! From the musical point of view I must say the three piece band sounded way better than in 1999. It took a good while to get the crowd going but as soon as the intro of 'Can't Stop This Thing We Started' people started jumping.

Keith's solo in 'It's Only Love' was incredible as usual. A little confusion after that when they mixed up the songorder a bit. 'Everything I Do' followed after that and then BA introduced the next song as 'kind of the first song that was played on the radio for me' started playing the opening chord, and I quickly recoginsed it. 'Straight From The Heart'. It was the first time I've heard it live and it was of course amazing. One of the best songs of the evening. After that BA said that they forgot to play 'Thought I'd Died And Gone To Heaven' but luckily they pulled of a good version. 'Please Forgive Me' was stripped down to just BA on vocal and Keith on guitar. Really beautiful. Best song of the whole show in my opinion. BA sang it all the way through (except the last verse and chorus).

For 'When You're Gone' he choose Kate (Katarina perhaps?) from Rågsved, Stockholm. She was not a very good singer, but, erm, a crowd pleaser to put it nicely. Funny stuff.

All in all a really good show. A standard setlist with the only genuine surprise being 'This Time' which sounded surprisingly good. We all left on a high and I met up with Lisa afterwards. Waited for about 2h to see if we could catch BA or somebody else but no luck! We caught the tube and went home. As I had written down the setlist during the show (like I always do!) everybody wanted to hear it. Quite hilarious really as I called out (loooud!) which songs had been played. Got home and went to bed with the biggest smile ever. Such a night and the very next day it was off to Gothenburg.
