02/03/02 - MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS ARENA

Review by Steven Stanley:
Well tonight was great and to be honest it was more than I expected! We got there a bit early so we decided to pinch a few BA posters to ease the time (we got 8 a piece see the pictures to the right!) and then went a scout around. After a McDonalds we were soon queuing for the gig and were let in 10 minutes early. I had time to buy some merchandise etc because the actual performance area doors were not open yet.

We quickly joined a queue for the standing area and were near the front. Eventually they opened the doors at the same time. When we were running down the steps so was everybody else from the other entrances! Once we got to the bottom it was a mad rush to the front. I started running but got told to stop (like hell!) eventually the security started rugby tackling people nearer the stage and nobody was getting through!!!! I adopted for a power walk instead and I sure enough got right to the front on Bryan's side not too far from his mike.

After an hour or so waiting the support act came on...Nerina Pallot. I have heard worse but her songs didn't get the crowd going and nobody was too bothered. When she had done it didn't take too long for BA's stage to be setup and before you knew it he came on with 'Back To You'...the MEN Arena went nuts :)

Of course throughtout the show I got loads of good photos and stuff like that, particularly of Keith but some of Bryan too. For 'When You're Gone' he brought up a blonde from Chorley who didn't know the words (or the song in my opinion!) to save her life. She looked pretty scared though!

After 'The Only Thing' they walked off stage for an encore (or so we thought) and took everybody by surprise and appeared on THE B-STAGE!!! Nobody saw it coming...I should have, I banged my knee on the bloody thing running for the stage! It's just what the show needed in my opinion...I mean he has been doing the same basic trio thing for 3 years now...this was just like old times and really got the crowd goin, plus there were some cool songs he played. It was the first time they had used the b-stage in 5 years and we were there! Below is the band taking the place by surprise on the b-stage:

Anyway after the B-Stage it was back on for 'Cloud #9' and the 'Run To You' (during which Keith came up to me and Karl and started playing infront of us and let us touch his guitar! Earlier Keith came up to Karl during 'It's Only Love' after he started bowing!

After the last song (a big Arena sing along to 'The Way You Make Me Feel') that was it and off he went. I was amazed, he is getting better everytime and to include a b-stage again with the trio is awesome. I can't wait for Birmingham, Cardiff, Brighton and Sheffield now :)
