13/07/02 - STADION AM HUNTING, BOCHOLT

Review by Maria Heutz:
Actually I wouldn’t go to an open-air-festival with three bands before Bryan on stage. But then I couldn’t get the Spirit album in the record shops and instead of the CD I bought a ticket for Bryan’s gig with special guests. And I don’t regret it. It was wonderful, simple brilliant. Bryan recalls his motto “Kids wonna rock”.
Early in the afternoon I arrived at the stadium “Am Hünting”. Almost at the announced time they opened the gates and we could run to the stage. My place was in the sixth row. It was sunny and warm weather and we just sat down to relax. I had a good conversation with two women in front of me. We met before last year at Bryan’s concert in Xanten.
The festival started at 6 p. m. with a band called “Yorck”, a young man and his mates from Bocholt or a town next to Bocholt. Their music was okay. But it’s always the same. Everyone is waiting for the main star - this means BA - and nobody is really interested in listening to someone before. They have rarely chances to get the audience crazy.
The next band was “Foul’s Garden”, who has a successful song called “Lemon tree”. Maybe you know it?
After this band “Alphaville” came on stage. Their biggest song was “Big in Japan”. I liked Foul’s Garden, they do a good job but the music from Alphaville wasn’t my taste.
Then about a quarter to ten Bryan came on stage and everybody was very happy, applauded and welcomed him.
His and the band’s equipment has changed since his last tour here. Ist colour now isn’t white but grey. Also he has a new keyboard player - named Gary Bright? - , the “New Guy”, as you could read at the back of his shirt.
On my way to Bocholt I wished Bryan would start with “Here I am” and so he did. I love this song and the feeling Bryan put in it with his voice and singing. As an opener for a concert it is maybe a bit too weak but followed by “Back to you” (greetings from the concerts last year), “House arrest”, “18 til I die”... he begun my most rockiest concert he ever did. The crowd got mad, jumped, danced.... Also he played his new song “Get off my back” which I heard for the first time. The only breather were “Everything I do”, “Heaven” and “I’m ready”. We tried to sing our best “nananananas” of “Cuts like a knife”. And at the end of “The only thing that looks good on me is you” Bryan sang the “you, you, you” so quick one after the other that we hadn’t a chance to say him that he is the one who looks good on us. Really great!!! It was Rock, Rock, Rock!!! This evening he didn’t communicate a lot with the audience. He said only that he loved the place and the decoration around it. (There have been a lot of different huts where drinks and food was sold and also inflatable things like a big Coca Cola bottle for example.) I regret this a bit because I love his conversation with the audience. It is so different at every concert and gives always special memories to recognise. But it doesn’t matter. His “Mel C.” in Bocholt was called Susi and she got a quick kiss on his mouth after her singing.
Unfortunately always time runs at concerts so it was just after the beginning at the end. But not really. They had a b-stage and there he performed “7 nights to rock”, “Poison Ivy”, a song I don’t know the title, “She’s only happy, when she’s dancing” and “Twist”. During “She’s only happy...” she invited people to come on the stage and dance with the band and of course they did. I couldn't watch it but it happened.
He came back to the main stage and played “Cloud # 9” and “Run to you” which was the last title there. No “Please forgive me” at the end and no chance for me to hate this song because it is the end of the concert. With “Run to you” at the end my mood was so much better than with “Please forgive me”. This song at the end of a gig makes me always feeling sad.
My way back home was awful. The organisation was very bad. So I needed more than 100 minutes for a distance of 5 kilometres. This meant I was at home again at half past three. But I would do it again. The concert was worth it.
