21/02/03 - PALAU SANT JORDI, BARCELONA

Review by Petra Stauber:
Well, for someone from Germany it's not that necessary to travel around Europe to see Bryan live but hey, what about combining Holidays AND concert?
When I heard that Bryan is doing a tour in Spain I immediately thought of Barcelona because i wanted to go their for years!
The only problem was to convince my boyfriend, because if I would have said: "we are flying to Barcelona for a BA show" he would for sure have said I'm completely insane…
So I asked him what about doing a long weekend in Barcelona and after he agreed I said casually that there would be a BA show also ;)

We arrived one day before the show and thanks god it wasn't difficult to get tickets (although the woman in the music shop couldn't believe someone coming from Germany to go to a concert in Spain. Since she was so amazed she even offered me to pick up the huge concert poster after the show.

Ok, finally Friday afternoon 6 pm we are at the venue. The Palau Sant Jordi is a really beautiful modern venue, located directly next to the Olympic Stadium from 1992. it was a beautiful spring evening with a stunning sunset.
There were about ca. 120 people waiting and we watched the securities while they were first opening the gates only that people had to stop at a second gate and then were pushed back because it was not opening time yet. Finally the opened the gates and a very strange feeling for me: walking slowly into the hall, not running like hell as usual. We had decided to go to the b-stage, where we were the only ones til the beginning of the show because obviously the thing was absolutely unknown in spain.

Bryan started with his "usual" setlist, still wearing the black t-shirts and blue jeans like in November in Germany.
The crowd was absolutely amazing, in between songs they started to sing "ole ole ole" like in a football stadium for minutes while Bryan was watching the crowd and smiling.
He didn't talk much beside "Hola Barcelona" and "Muchas Gracias". For WYG he chose a nice girl, who was an art student. Bryan had said "you in the black t-shirt" but not one girl appeared on stage, two did (both with black t-shirts). First Bryan wanted to send one back but she simply stayed and so Bryan started the song with two girls. One of them was jumping around and singing into the microphone of the other girl, so nobody was singing or interacting with Bryan. He desperately tried to get attention but it didn't work very well. After the song both of them wanted to rush from stage, so Bryan said while watching them climbing down the stage: "if you stay and go with that boy you might even get a t-shirt".

Finally it was time for the b-stage: they started with "a little less conversation" but both Bryan's bass and microphone didn't work so the song had a, let's say, different kind of sound……
Then they started with "she's only happy..:" and after he had chosen two other girls to come up he pointed directly at me (I don't have to tell you how my heart was beating….). the fence was about 1 metre high and I don't know how I made it, but seconds later I was on the stage. I still get an adrenaline rush when thinking back at it, dancing and singing (and smiling :-)) eye-to-eye with them. More and more girls came up on stage and by the end of the song Bryan was in the centre of a huge girl crowd and even I could not see anymore of him but some blonde hair and he could not even play the bass anymore because it was so crammed on stage.

Back on the mainstage there was suddenly only Keith playing a wonderful Spanish intro on accoustic guitar. Then the others joined him and they played HYELAW!!!!!
The Spanish audience absolutely went nuts.
Bryan pointed on his imaginar watch after that song and asked "you don't want to go home?"
"noooooooo"
"I always wonder about one thing: I go back to my hotel after the show, but where the hell are all of YOU going??"
now everyone was yelling something
" you know, I think about these things…."

Then he introduced his last song, only him being on stage with acoustic guitar: "I now play a song which was one of the first songs I have written. Sometimes it's not the text of a song, but the sound of the words that makes something special. To be honest, I don't know what the song means but it's a wonderful one"
Then he sang SFTH, only Bryan and his guitar, a wonderful finishing song for that wonderful night.

We decided not to wait after the show because it was raining and we had a 2 kilometre walk to the next metro station. But I couldn't stop smiling all way back, to be honest I haven't even stopped til now :-)

We enjoyed Barcelona for 2 more days and had a wonderful weekend in Spain.

Review by Shere:
well, it were 2 hours of rock, 3 big screens, a nice lil stage and more than 10.000 people

first came up on stage Joao Pedro Pais, a young portuguese rocker who did a good job, then about 22h lights went out for the second time that nite, and bryan and the guys came on stage, bryan started with HERE I AM....

he was in a very good mood, smilin, kiddin and everythin...

people was very pleased to hear: house arrest since they didnt expect bryan to play it ...

bryan was very talkative and everythin, there was a great conection with the crowd...

keith was fuckin GREAT as always...

the most touchin moment was when bryan played EID...oh and also, when playin Cuts like a knife, you know, the nananana part, bryan tellin everybody to sing and all that....

the most funny moment was when bryan looked for a girl to sing WYG, instead of 1 girl, 2 girls came on stage and bryan kept on sayin with a cheeky look on his face "this is what i love about Barcelona (BCN) you call a girl, and 2 girls come on stage" LOL.. what a guy...

the girl bryan called was called Lydia, she was very cute, dunno the name of the second girl lol, well, the point is that the second girl was tryin to get bryan atention all the time, but he....er..lets say, he was more interested about Lydia....lol...i *think* he liked her more....

in the middle of the song, he took away the paper with the lyrics, and he looked like he was thinkin: can you please pay me some atention instead of readin that?! lol very funny ...

then, the song ended, and bryan asked them some questions, obviously in english...and they didnt get it, they replied sayin: "yes" to every question....lol oh jesus... im not good at english, but those girls.... :S

bryan invited them to spend the rest of the gig in the backstage, and the girls almost die, they went like shoutin and looked very happy...lol some guys joked sayin they would be really excited after the gig, when bryan would ....er..."play" lol 69 with the blond one....oh jesus....

the people i know who were there have told me that one of the greatest moments was durin TOTTLGOMIY, you know the part when he says: the only thing that good looks on me is YOU while pointin to the crowd and the crowd sayin YOU pointin to bryan, when the song was almost finished bryan started shakin his head like sayin NO, and the crowd started shoutin more and more loud YOU while pointin to bryan...

cuts like a knife was another greaat moment..unforgetable
on the b-stage as always, lots of girls came up to dance and sing and everythin...

then he walked through the crowd and everythin, durin tbom, people....well, lol, girls could reach him and security guys told bryan about it, but he, as always, didnt give a fuck and kept on singin and leavin all those lucky girls have the time of their lives...

when everybody thought the concert was over, bryan came out again, alone, and talkin with naturality he said that he hadnt nothin else ready or rehearsed... he asked the crowd if they didnt feel like going to sleep, cuz he had to go to his hotel lol, in the end, he decided to take his acoustic guitar and he played Straight from the heart and that was all.

he speaks spanish, cuz i have heard him, but this time he spoke a lil spanish, most of things were said in english...

B-stage madness!

Jumbo screens make Bryan easier to see for those at the back... when he's not on the b-stage that is :)
