09/05/03 - WESTFALENHALLE, DORTMUND

Review by Andreas Kristensen:
Great concert. Very loose, and Bryan and the band was jumping around having fun. He even let a guy up during the last part of Can’t Stop This Thing We Started…. The gig was only half-sold out (meaning approx 6.000 ppl there) but nonetheless good with no b-stage too. C’mon Everybody was a true jam-session on-stage; just like in the old 1991-1994 Touring-days… An impro change of Please Forgive Me was nice, though Adams still mix up the lyrics big time.

Thank you (you 4 gals know who you are!!) for a great night, and let’s do it all again on the next tour after the next album is out!! Andreas Kristensen, Denmark.

Review by Maria Heutz:
Against my expectations after two operations I was fit enough to go to Bryan’s concert in Dortmund. Moya, my friend from England came over again. We arrived at the venue at half past twelve and were number 9 and 10 in the row. The entrance was covered so we were happy. The weather prognosis wasn’t that good for this day. Later Stephanie and her mother arrived. Moya met them before in March in Cologne at Bryan’s concert. Also Ulrike, Christiane and their friends came and we had a lot to talk about. Ulrike and her friends talked about the concert the day before. This took place in Friedrichshafen in the south of Germany. They were a bit disappointed because the concert only last for 1 hour and 40 minutes and hasn’t had a b-stage. But the concert itself has been okay.
There were no barriers in front of the hall but three doors next to each with windows in. So we could have a look into and saw that we had to pass two another doors in a distance of 10 and 15 meters. On the ticket they promised to let us in at 6 p. m. An hour earlier the securities built the barriers behind the second doors. Then an unbelievable thing happened. We stood in front of the door on the left side and only the middle door was opened. So everyone could get quicker in than we. We were very disappointed. Why had we waited that long? It’s always the same. People who come later than you entered first. Security isn’t able to do this right. I don’t know why. Okay, we had passed the first doors and had to wait again. We stood crowded together, crammed in like sardines. I didn’t feel well and thought I will faint soon. Fortunately I got through without problems. It was awful. We were not allowed to use the doors in front of us. We had to run around and took the entrance to the standing area on the left side. This meant we could go in earlier than the fans who had turned to the right side. There the door opened a bit later than the one on our side. So we managed it in the first row, not in the middle but on the left side.
At 8 p. a. the supporting band “Lea Finn” came on stage, a young nice looking woman with long blond hairs. She sang the songs and the other band members played the instruments. She and her music were okay but she didn’t compare with VEGA 4. One song she dedicated to Lance who had listened to her album the day before and chose this song as his favourite.
At 9 p. a. BA came on stage. They now were a new outfit. They changed the black t-shirts again shirts with collars and buttons in light blue or grey. As he did in March he started with Here I am followed by 18 til I die. He didn’t play House arrest. Let’s make a night to remember was the long version and not the blues jam one. Can’t stop this thing we started couldn’t be stopped through the band. So Bryan asked a guy of the audience to stop the song. This guy went on stage and stopped the song. Back to you was good as usually. This is a real great live song! Summer of ’96 was the acoustic version again. When Bryan announced It’s only love he made a gesture as if Tina Turner is coming on stage. But then he told us he has to do Tina’s part of the song and he is glad to have Keith Scott on his side. When he mentioned that (Everything I do) I do it for you was originally written as a piano song he referred to Gary from Toronto. When he said Toronto Mickey, Keith, Norman and Bryan lift up their shirt collars in front of their noses and mouths. This was a joke about the illness SARS which also people around Toronto have. By the way Gary sang a lot of backing vocals and he did very well. This sounded wonderful.
Norman didn’t play his guitar to (Everything I do) I do it for you but stood on stage as if he was playing. He didn’t move for the whole song. He stood there in the same pose. He is a funny guy. In my estimation he plays without passion. He doesn’t show reactions and seemed to be an alien element in the band. I don’t remember the song but once he played a chorus wrong and Bryan looked in his direction. My assumption is he threw a reproachful glance at him. During Cuts like a knife we did our best “na, na, na, nas” and didn’t end them after the song until Bryan stopped us. For When you’re gone Bryan chose a young black haired lady with glasses. Maximilia came from Gelsenkirchen. You must know Gelsenkirchen and Dortmund have a big rivalry between their football teams BVB and Schalke. So the audience booed her. Bryan didn’t understand and asked her again where she was from. But Maximilia wouldn’t like to say it again. Also she didn’t explain it to Bryan. Maybe she didn’t know about the rivalry? She was a good singer and enjoyed it. After the song Bryan thanked Maximilia from Gelsenkirchen and the hail of whistles started again. Bryan is no more able to sing the whole lyrics from Please forgive me. I think he did that song too often in a shorter version at the end of a concert. And so he did in Dortmund. Maybe we should bring him the lyrics for the next concert. (This is a joke!) He played the quicker version of Heaven and fortunately without Do from Holland. We listened to Somebody and the last song of the first part of this show was Can’t stop this thing we started. This is so great with the quicker becoming “you, you, you” between Bryan and the audience. They thanked us and said goodbye. When they made the bow Keith made a step forward and fell down. He was okay after this and everybody laughed about it. So I’m not sure whether this was an acting thing or whether this really happened to him. Anyway he did it again the next times before they left.
Also they once again put their collars in front of their noses and mouths and looked at Gary. We didn’t let end our applause and asked with this for an encore. So they soon came back on stage again. They played Cloud # 9 and Run to you. During This time Bryan put out his guitar and his microphone and came to the barriers. He came closer and closer and stood in front of Stephanie, just two people next to me. She flirted with him, embarrassed him and told him that she loves him. Also she asked for a kiss and she got it. I only could touch his shirt. But this wasn’t the reason why he later stood on stage again with his shirt out of his trousers. That wasn’t me!! I’m not guilty!! When he played C’mon everybody he tried to put his shirt into his trousers again. But this isn’t that easy when you are singing and playing the guitar at the same time. After the Best of me they left the stage again.
Soon only Keith came back on stage and started his guitar playing. Then also the band returned. So the last song in Dortmund was Have you ever really loved a woman.
Okay, maybe they should have played a bit longer. I missed a few of my favourite songs and also the b-stage. But the concert itself has been a very good one, one of my bests. Bryan was in a very good mood and played full of passion. We wouldn’t leave after this. So we decided to go to the backstage area. It isn’t that difficult to find where you have to go because you always will find the big trucks. And so we did. We had just waited a short while, when the first car passed and nobody noticed who has been in. A few minutes later Bryan came. He smiled at us and opened his window. First I only would like to have a look at him again. I wouldn’t ask for an autograph. But Moya told me she wanted one and would only do this when I would do this to. I think it must be so boring for stars to write down their names the whole time. So I never did this before even if I met many times my favourite football player years ago. I preferred to speak to him because the chance to meet a star is very rarely. I queued and suddenly a truck came and flashed his headlights because Bryan’s car stood in his way. I thought okay that was it. But Bryan told his driver to go on for a few meters and stopped again. Then it was my time. I gave him my ticket and said: “Could you please write for Maria?” When he began to write he also started to sing: “Maria, Maria, Maria…” from the West Side Story musical. That came as a complete surprise to me so I wasn’t able to say a word. I only brought out: “Thank you; you did a great show tonight, thank you.” He thanked me to and it was Moya’s turn. She had to spell her name for him and he moaned: “Oh, an English woman, this means trouble, trouble, trouble.” We don’t know why he has this opinion and couldn’t clear it up. I was totally happy and I’m still on cloud # 9.
We said goodbye to the others, walked to our cars and drove home.
Moya will see Bryan soon. She will go to his concert in Bristol next weekend. I don’t know when I will see him again but I hope it will not take so long.
