12/05/03 - MESSEHALLE, CHEMNITZ

Review by Petra Stauber:
I'm back to work after an exciting and one of the most fun trip ever to Chemnitz :) should finally be working now but use my lunch break to summarize that gig:

The venue was pretty small and they had built up the gates pretty early. After an uneventful 4 hour waiting in the sun, they opened the gates at 6.30 pm already (in winter they let us always wait til 7 or 7.30 pm, does that make sense???).
We had to run"up and down" the hall 2 times before we finally got near the stage, but we made it first row a bit left to the center.
Bryan came on stage 10 minutes after 9. when I said Friedrichshafen was good, then Chemnitz was fantastic!!! Although from the musical point of view (more songs!!!!) and especially from his mood. I have not often seen him that much smiling, grinning and joking with Mickey and Keith. Doing his usual Tina Turner introduction for "it's only love" he said "keith, our weapon of mass destruction……. But don't tell Bush about it, ok!" when Keith had his soli during that song Bryan was standing in front of Mickey and they were shouting at each other several times, then suddenly changing the rhythm and melody so that poor Keith was pretty busy to follow them, what had the effect that Bryan and Mickey were laughing that much that they could hardly go on.
Oh, they played a wonderful version of "please forgive me", short, but sweet!
For WYG he choose a girl, who was shy and a it taciturn, only giving one word answers. Further she said she was unemployed at the moment, so Bryan was asking the audience about 4 times to give poor Rebecca a job.
He did the most talking (again) before EID. He started "well, that's probably our last tour….." making a big pause during which I was standing there thinking if I am in the wrong movie and might have missed the career end of Bryan ;) before he continued "…before my new album is coming out in September" puuuuhhh, relief
"IF I finally finish my album" (big grinning down to us)
" everybody think it's easy for a songwriter, and then you think yourself, today we change this song, and tomorrow another" (standing with his arms to the sky, wearing that "innocent" look)
"maybe it would be better if someone would just give me some ready songs and I would only sing them"
then he told, as always that this song is a guitar song and NOT a piano song what always leads in introducing Gary. "that's Gary Breit, he is from Toronto, you know, it's dangerous there because of SARS. But I can assure you, Gary is ok"
right at that moment, don't know if it was planned or not, Gary started coughing.
Bryan, looking surprised "Gary, you are ok, aren't you???"
The other "new" song is "This Time", which he is singing without guitar but walking up and down the stage til the remotest corner with his microphone. That song absolutely drove the crowd wild.
During "run to you" he was joking again with Mickey. At the end when he always marks with his arms when all the other have to stop he did that for about 5 times and Mickey always hit the same drum. Then Bryan started shaking his butt, Mickey doing another drum, Bryan shaking his butt to the other side, Mickey doing another drum sound, almost falling down of his chair because of his laughter.
Bryan "I think we start to get a bit silly now"
Encore yesterday was "have you ever really..:" with the usual amazing intro of Keith and a latino looking and clapping Bryan. "ola, muchas gracias amigos"
He bowed several times at each side waved, waved some more and then finally went off.
We waited at the back entrance and soon Mickey and Keith left without stopping.
Only 5 minutes later (we had sit down because we were prepared for another hour wait) Bryan's Mercedes came out and ……. STOPPED. Since it was only 11.30 pm there were about 40 people who were pushing and shoving around his window a lot.
He was in a great mood again, but this time didn't sign any live pics again. He doesn't say a word, just give it back to you with a smile. I gave him the booklet of "star" instead murmuring something like "this is my all time favourite, love the lyrics". He was staring at it for a few seconds and then signing it.
It took me a whole day to finally check what he was drawing around my name: it's the cover where you see his silhouette and guitar on blue and violet background. And he was doing a bubble (like in cartoons) around my name and 4 points leading from his mouth to it so as if he was saying my name.
Then he started answering his mobile and had a headset in his ear for that. Funny, because he said things like "yeah international" or "he is more in my generation", then asking "what's your name?" or "thank you" in between and no-one quite knew to whom he was speaking in which moment. His small mobile was lying on his big white pillow and because it was quite dark you couldn't hardly see the headset.
Absolutely everyone got one autograph (took him 15 minutes) then he drove off, waving out of the window.
Happily we went to our hotel, which was only 400 metres away, how convenient!!!!

For me it was a great finale for the "various" spring tours and it was great to see how much Bryan - and we - enjoyed every single second of the show!!!
