17/05/03 - ASHTON GATE STADIUM, BRISTOL
Review by Steven
Stanley :
For anyone who wasn't at Ashton Gate Stadium the gig was absolutely
immense. For a guy who hasn't had a new album out since before 'S
Club 7' or 'Westlife' even started their careers...the fact that
he can still pack a sellout 30,000 people into a stadium with just
2 months notice is amazing. This was the first time I had seen Bryan
in a stadium...and I liked what I saw! Hopefully this kind of spectacle
will give him the nudge to play these venues more often in the future.
I started the day going down with my mate Steph
and setting off early in the morning from Sheffield. I arrived there
and met my friend Adrian
and started queuing about 8.30am. The day passed gradually and it
rained quiet often as well but all in all it wasn't too bad. The
security guards actually let us into the stadium to see the stage
being setup...looked cool!
Eventually it was almost going in time and the security
(who were really good actually) informed us that the giant screens
had blown down in the wind! We were let in 15 minutes late 20 people
at a time...I managed to get a good spot at the barrier with Adrian
and everyone. After no time at all 'Vega4' came on who seem to get
better each time I see them...the lead singer once again like in
Warwick last year climb to the top of the stage which was funny.
Then 'David Sneddon' came on after that...not my
cup of tea at all. Really cheesy and he did an awful cover of 'Lonely
Hearts Club Band' by 'The Beatles'. A lot of badfans were just in
laughing at him! He also came onstage with these really really cheesy
sunglasses on like he was a total superstar...yeah right mate! He
soon went anyway and it was soon time for the good stuff....
....Bryan came onstage soon after to a rousing reception
from the biggest rock crowd in the south west of England for 20
years. They also put the big screens back up for Bryan's performance
which they had to do for people really at the back of the crowd!
The whole crowd was singing 'Here I Am' and it was sooo loud when
everyone shouted back '18 Til I Die!'. 'Let's Make A Night To Remember'
was nice to hear again as well. In my opinion it's still better
for him to play '69 full electric but at the gig he did it half
acoustic again....still, it kicked ass!

Keith's solo got better once more during 'It's Only
Love', this time choosing the mike stand to help him with his quest!
'Heaven' was played upbeat again but I still prefer the older version.
The start of 'Somebody' was cool as well with Bryan playing a lead
intro to it before the band launched into it. Probably my favourite
song of the night was 'The Only Thing'....it rocked plain and simple,
complete with all the 'you's' yelling back to him at the end!
B-stage time, 'Poison Ivy' wasn't played but 'C'mon
Everybody' was!!! Also 'Wild Thing' as well :) It was just really
cool to see...just like on the SFSG video!

Back on the mainstage Bryan came down to the crowd
again for 'The Best Of Me' like in Rotterdam which was cool. Adrian's
missus Joanne got her hand familiar with Bryan's ass during this!
'Straight From The Heart' was the last song and it was nice to hear
it being there. At the end of the show he told us what he had been
telling the European audiences the past few days...that he was working
hard on his new album because he has been lazy! He said that he
was trying to get it done for September...I can't wait!

After the show we didn't wait around for anyone
to come out and sign because it appeared during the gig that something
was going on between Bryan and Keith. Keith certainly did not look
happy throughout the second half of the show. That aside anyway
Adrian certainly was on the prowl again and found something else
to pinch...we got this big plastic sign (which is very heavy and
is sitting in my back garden now hehe!). We had to walk all the
way back to the hotel with it which was a good 2 or 3 miles! Here
is the picture of it below!
