02/12/04 - JAKOBSHALLE, BASEL

Review by Claire Griffths:
After having slept only 4 hours, I was dead tired when I got up at 6 o'clock to set off for school in Zürich Oerlikon. I had to endure 2 hours of boring French and politics before my best friend would pick me up, but eventually I made my way to Hardbrücke, where Jeannine was waiting for me. I just told my teachers I wasn't feeling well, and that I was gonna go home lol. We fetched ourselves something to eat and were on the road about 10ish. We decided to stop at Jeannine's Dad's place in Frick to drop off some stuff before heading to the venue. It took us about 40 minutes to get there, but once we arrived, her Dad wouldn't let us go that quickly. He cooked us lunch and we had a good chat. By the time we arrived at the venue it was about quarter to two and I was worried there were gonna be a lot of people queuing already, but fortunately there were only two girls standing there. I was really surprised, but then again...hey..this is Switzerland lol!! I remember starting to queue at 10am in Newcastle with Steven, Ade and Steph just over a month ago, and still there had been people there already since 6 o'clock lol.

Anyway, I saw the trucks standing outside the venue assoon as we got there and I started to get really excited!! We immediately asked one of the security people standing by the back entrance, whether Bryan had arrived already. His answer was no, so we went round to the front to check out which entrance was best to get in. For you guys who are yet to go to a concert in the St. Jakobshalle..it's the smaller entrance on the left hand side of the building. It hasn't really got a roof above.so we did get wet a little, when it started to rain, but those doors are much.I repeat.MUCH nearer to the stairs you have to run down to get front row standing.

It was freezing cold outside and after waiting around a little and chatting to the other two girls, that were there, I literally was an ice cube. I told Jeannine I'd go back to the car to get on some more clothes, and so I went round the other side. I saw the silver and the black car as soon as I turned round the corner. Lol.no need to ask if Bryan, Keith and the rest of the band had arrived yet. Still I had a little chat with Mr. Security and he said, I had just missed the band. I was a bit disappointed of course, cos I knew I wouldn't be seeing them after the show. There was only one way for Bryan to come out, and that way was almost totally open. ..I happened to be right by the way..the band did leave straight after the show...no chance to get there in time.

Anyway... after getting changed, me and Jeannine decided to go to the shopping mall across the road, so the time would pass quicker and cause I wanted to get some money. We bought a booklet full of crossword puzzles, so we had something to do while waiting around. We returned to our places at about 4 pm. There were a few new people standing there now, but most of them were waiting by the other entrance, which had a roof and was protected from the chilly wind. All in all, the time past quite fast. As always the last hour was the worst. Inside the venue, we could see the workers walking around in t-shirts, making food, while we were freezing our a.. off. I knew some of the people working there, because in Zürich I work as a security helper at concerts myself. So funny enough I saw my bosses walking around inside, while waiting for the doors to open. Although officially they would open at 7, we assumed they would open at 6...and so they did..or almost anyway.

I was the second person to run into the hall and I secured a place for myself and Jeannine first row middle, right in front of Bryan's mike woohooooo!!!!! Ahhh...now it was time to relax a little. Like always, the security guards made us sit down, because there were still two hours to go, until the support act would come onstage. I went for a stroll round the venue and bought some merch. Then I found out that the support act was Beverly Knight, which I thought was cool..especially for Jeannine, because that is more like her music. She actually only came with me, so I didn't have to go to the gig on my own, which I am very thankful for!! So THANKS JEANNINE!!

While waiting around we had a good chat with the people sitting around us, but still I was really glad when the support act finally came on stage. My god she has an amazing voice!!! She really knows how to put everyone in a good mood and pulled off a great show. The only song I knew tho was 'shoulda woulda coulda' or something like that lol. After she went off stage, we had to wait another 35 minutes or something and the crowd was getting restless and started doing 'the Swiss thing' to get Bryan out of his dressing room lol.

Finally the lights went low and Bryan and the band came running on stage. Everybody started cheering, screaming and clapping and they kick-started straight into Room Service. Man was that good to see and hear the old folks again!! And what a show they put on!!! They were in a great mood; Bryan and Keith with a big grin on their faces all the time.
After the song, he talked a little. He said:

"during the show, we're gonna play some new songs"....(cheers from the crowd)... "And we're gonna play some old songs as well"...(even bigger cheers from the crowd).. now Bryan with a big grin on his face: ..."and then we're gonna play some new songs again"..(cheers again)...Bryan's grin is getting bigger and bigger..."and then we're gonna play some old songs again"...(bigger cheers again). Hehe.was funny

Personally, I would have preferred more new songs, but it seemed like, the rest wanted to hear the old stuff again. Oh well...next time Bryan! He then continued the show. After 'Can't stop..' he said he was gonna play a really slow song..and I actually believed him. But then they suddenly kicked into "Kids wanna rock" and they got the whole front section jumping and cheering like mad!! It was absolutely great!!!

After that he started talking about how much he loves Switzerland, and that he has a good time whenever he comes here or something like that. So since it was the 20th anniversary of the reckless album, they were gonna do a song from it. When I heard that, I thought they were gonna play 'It's only love' or 'Heaven' or something like that..but no... SHE'S ONLY HAPPYYYYYY....WHEN SHE'S DANCING!!!!!!!! Wohooooo!!! That song was fantastic!!! Bryan was running from one side to the other while Keith was dancing around the stage with his guitar. It looked so funny!!!! Keith was great throughout the whole night!!!! Dancing around and doing his thing hehe.

Straight after 'She's only happy..' They rocked right into 'back to you' - Always a great song live, but unfortunately we couldn't get the 'back to you bounce' going on, cause he kept it really short this time. Instead the 'na na na' part in 'Cuts like a knife' was really long. He just wouldn't be satisfied hehe.

The WYG-girl was really funny too. Her name was Sarah, and she was from a place called 'Fruttigen', which made the whole crowd laugh, because it's some kind of tiny village in the middle of nowhere hehe.

Bryan: So Sarah, where are you from?
Sarah: I'm from Fruttigen.
Bryan said: "What? Fried chicken??!?!?
Sarah: Fruttigen
Bryan: Fried chicken...oh no..Fruit chicken
Sarah: Fruttigen
Bryan: Fruit chicken
Sarah: Fruttigen!!!
Bryan (with a sheepish smile): Yeah, yeah I got it...Fruit chicken

Then he asked her whether she had a job, and she said she was a trainee in an office.

Bryan: What office?
Sarah: ...yes, in an office
Bryan: Yes I know in an office.but what kind of office? What do you do there?
Sarah: erm..
Bryan: you don't wanna tell me?
Sarah: *laughs*
Bryan: She doesn't wanna tell me
Sarah: No. yes. *giggles*
She turns to us and says: Ich weiss nöd wie mers seit ( I don't know how to say it)
Then she says it in German :...something.something.. hydraulics...
I didn't understand it myself..but it made the crowd laugh again.

Bryan: Are you nervous?
Sarah: Yes, a little
Bryan: Oh don't worry! You're only singing in front of about 9000 people. *laughs*
Bryan: Do you want the words to the song?
Sarah: erm...yes, maybe

Someone brings out the lyrics (same guy as always)

Bryan: Ok, we're gonna start here at the top..and then we're gonna go all the way to the bottom.
Sarah: Yes I know
Bryan: ..How did you know???

That was not all they talked.but anyway.it was very funny listening to the two of them. I don't think she was much of a singer..but she had the moves going on lol!!! She was dancing around Bryan all the time, then she hopped over to Keith and danced next to him, which he really enjoyed lol! After they had finished, Bryan said, that he had never seen someone dance so sexy before lol!

'Heaven' and 'Not Romeo, not Juliet' were lovely. Then somebody, threw up a rolled up letter. Bryan picked it up and opened it. He started reading loud. "Dear Bryan."..(she or he then said thank you for something..don't remember what it was...and then...) "Would you please give this letter to Keith" Everybody laughed. Bryan gave Keith a funny look, and Keith sort of lifted his shoulders like saying.it's not my fault hehe. Was really funny.

Like always.Keith got it going on in 'It's only love'. His solo was amazing!! He was standing right in front of me doing his moves and dancing around. When he saw me take up my camera to take a pic, he suddenly dropped down and gazed into the cam with big eyes and open mouth hehe. I was a bit late to take the pic, but it's still quite good. I gave him the thumbs up and a big grin, which he returned. During Keith's solo, Bryan went to the back and had a laugh with Mickey, who was throwing his drumsticks in the air, catching them again and then carrying on playing, while chatting and laughing with Bryan. They really were in a great mood!!!

During 'The only thing..', I caught Keith's eye again and asked him for a plectrum. He gave me a nod and flicked over one of his 'Didn't I tell you to f. off'-plectrums. (For those of you who don't know... that's what's written on Keith's plectrums lol) It landed on the other side of the barrier. I couldn't see it though. I thought I'd get it after the show. But when one of the stage workers handed me up my coat with Keith's plectrum there on it, waiting for me, some stupid girl just pushed me aside and snatched it away from me. How mean is that!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well..next time. Besides, I already have two *grin*

Just before they bowed, someone threw up a red hat, with the white Swiss cross in the middle. (Same as in Grindelwald April 04) Bryan picked it up, put it on, said goodbye and then they ran off the stage.

Of course we made them return though, and we gave them "the Swiss wave" again, which they were fascinated by.

They then did 'Cloud #9', 'Run to You' (Keith was dancing round the stage again lol) and 'The best of Me', during which, Bryan came down. Then it was time to say goodbye for the band. They were all laughing and having fun up there. Erm..did I mention that they were in a great mood?

They all bowed together. Then Mickey threw his sticks into the crowd. One to the right..and one into the middle...right towards me. Me and Jeannine grabbed it at the same time, and then suddenly, hands rushed out from everywhere, trying to pinch away Mickey's drumstick, we had just caught. Me and Jeannine didn't let go though. It actually got quite rough, until I noticed, that my camera got tangled in the mess and I thought it was gonna break, so I decided to let go. I was really mad though, because I had it first, and the same thing had happened to me in Grindelwald a half a year before.

The band said their last goodbyes and then walked off. Bryan came on again alone and played Flying. Absolutely beautiful!!! During the song, somebody tapped my shoulder..I turned around..it was Jeannine..holding Mickey's drumstick in her hand..giving it to me. Wow! She told me after the gig, that she had had a talk with the two boys for about five minutes.and in the end, they had both let go of it hehe. Lucky me J

After 'Flying', he performed 'All for Love' (The crowd went nuts) and 'Straight from the Heart', which he wrote when he was 18, some time after dinner I think lol. STILL!! It was good to hear those songs again though. I absolutely love them!

The last song was a nice surprise, because I had never heard 'Room Service' acoustically before. Hehe, how cool is that...starting and ending a show with the same song!!! I was pretty overwhelmed after the show. I already had forgotten how much fun these gigs were. I was dead tired..but dead happy too. The people started clearing out, and I just stayed, incase there was anything to get, from the stage,....but there wasn't, and I needed a glass of water like I never needed one before lol!! We went out, bought some drinks and then headed to the back entrance...but like I thought...they had already left. We went back to the car and I was really happy I didn't have to drive lol! 30 minutes later we arrived in Frick again. I think I slept about 3 hours or something..then I had to go back to school!!!! What a day!!! I would do it any time again though!! Bryan!!!! Come back!!! hehe
