It's hard to believe it was 20 years ago, but my primary school friends and I used to dance around singing "Summer of '85" - our modified version of Bryan Adams's classic hit single Summer of '69. That's how long Adams has been around, but on Wednesday night at the Sydney Entertainment Centre he seemed as fresh and vibrant as ever. And for any doubters out there, Adams's husky singing voice was better than I expected; his strength is that distinctive, heartfelt voice, plus those deceptively simple guitar riffs (on tracks including Run to You) which have made him a household name.

The Canadian singer was celebrating 25 years of releasing records, so he performed tracks from his entire career. Call me a sucker for a romantic power ballad, but his half-unplugged version of (Everything I Do) I Do It For You was simply beautiful, as were other standout classics including Heaven. Adams, who is also an acclaimed photographer, wore the classic rock uniform on stage: tight black T-shirt and dark denim jeans (and all the members of his band wore the same thing). But his live performance was a reminder of his unique abilities as a songwriter and singer.
