17/05/05 - ODYSSEY ARENA,
BELFAST Review by Joanne Lowry (Belfast News): Just
Can't Stop That Thing He Started... There wasn't a lumberjack shirt in sight
when Bryan Adams played the first of his two Belfast gigs this week. Undoubtedly
it will be the same cool crowd tonight at the arena. The
groover from Vancouver proved his huge appeal by the vast array of fans which
packed into the arena for the opening sell-out gig. In
fact, some wouldn't even have been born when Adams first hit the charts 25 years
ago but it didn't deter them from turning out in force to hear the 45-year-old
belt out the hits - and they even knew all the words. The
show's surprise opener was Room Service, the title track of his latest album,
but the crowd warmed up as familiar classics were mixed with more recent songs. Favourites
like One Night Love Affair, Can't Stop This Thing We Started, Cuts Like A Knife,
Heaven and Run To You were all received with rapturous applause. No
sooner had a few bars of Summer of '69 been played than the crowd went wild. Adams
told the audience: "I didn't think when I wrote this all those years ago
in a cold, damp basement I'd be standing here." The
rock anthem was followed up by Everything I Do (I Do It For You) and lighters
were replaced with the latest in mobile phone technology as the whole arena waved
in time to the music. Younger fans were catered for
with recent hits like When You're Gone - when a member of the audience replaced
Melanie C - Cloud Number Nine and Best Of Me while die-hard fans weren't left
disappointed with renditions of This Time, Kids Wanna Rock and It's Only Love.
Promising to play as many songs as possible, and even asking for requests, Adams
told the crowd at one point: "This is the best reception I've ever had in
Belfast." He didn't disappoint with a set lasting
for more than two hours. When the other band members went off stage, Adams returned
and was under the spotlight with flawless acoustic renditions of All For Love
and Straight From The Heart. |
