06/05/06 - AMERISTAR CASINO STAR PAVILION, KANSAS CITY, MO

Review by Michael Coates:
My wife and I made the 3.5 hour trek to Kansas City to see Bryan Adams last Saturday. It's the longest I've driven to see him but considering he doesn't tour the States much anymore, any chance I get that is remotely close I know I need to attend. Playing at the Ameristar Casino Pavilion, Bryan and mates took the stage at around 8:10 and played for 2 hours to the 1,100 or so fans in attendance.

My wife and I had second row seats which soon turned into resting just below the stage and resulted in some pretty good pictures and hand slaps with Bryan himself. Being so close, I was mostly hearing Bryan's monitor so I can't really comment on how the show sounded. In most cases, I couldn't hear Keith's work on guitar but I guess those are the sacrifices of being close.

The show featured a few gems that haven't been performed as much lately, including 'Lonely Nights' and 'She's Only Happy When She's Dancin'. Having not seen the Room Service tour yet, I was a little disappointed to only hear 'Open Road' performed.

Highlights of the show for me included the unplugged version of 'I'm Ready' and hearing 'Lonely Nights' live for the first time in 7 concerts. The 'When You're Gone' girl did well and knew the lyrics - Bryan seemed to have fun with her. He closed the show with his solo/acoustic set of which I was glad to hear 'Please Forgive Me', albeit abbreviated.

Afterwards, we met Keith Scott for the first time and he was as nice as can be. He stopped to talk about the show and took the time out for a few pictures. What a great guy to take 10 minutes out of the night to meet the fans. The same however can't be said for Bryan. I spotted him and a fan base of maybe ten, walking through the casino lobby after the show. I asked for one picture to which he responded 'if you walk with me'. Thinking he and the fans would go to a more out of the way location than the casino lobby, I followed, and followed, and followed, until he closed himself behind an elevator and disappeared. No picture, nor any interest in meeting some of the fans who just shelled out $95 to see him.

(Above) Keith (like the true gent that he is) takes time to meet Michael and his wife after the show among with other fans. What a bloke.

Overall, a fun show on a great Saturday night with some good rarities thrown into the set.
Until the next time he comes remotely close to St. Louis.....
