22/07/06 - ALTHORP, NORTHAMPTON

Review by Steven Stanley:
Having come straight down from Derby the previous day we were left wondering what Bryan would throw into the mix for this show. After getting some sleep in Leicester myself, Nat and Chelsey couldn't be bothered to queue again and were quite happy to go to the pub all day (after listening to some undiscovered artist in the car!).... particularly as the weather wasn't brilliant during the day. We were eating our dinner outside when a huge storm took hold and umbrellas lifted out of the tables and went flying across the garden like spears! The rain really was torrential. We were joined by Zippy, Sue and hov course the hever so posh... Mave & Bob!

The weather soon cleared anyway after a 5 hour pub sesh, we set off in convoy to Althorp where the show was taking place (of course home & resting place of Diana). It was the same setup as Derby... trailing through parkland down small country lanes, but this time the grass carpark was full of sheep shit! Oh well! We all went inside anyway and were greeted with another beautiful setting and a big crowd were already in there. We managed to get a good spot anyway near the front on Keith's side. We were joined by my friends from back home Barry and Nicola who randomly spotted me in the crowd! 'Raemonn' the support act weren't bad again... quite good but only caught the last few songs like last night. The weather was great by this point as well!

8.30 hit and the dudes came on with 'So Far So Good'... Bryan's mic wasn't working so just got a load of Gretsch in the speakers! 2/3's through the song Jody turned it up and the crowd cheered! Regular numbers followed and were all great as usual (a few sound problems in 'LMANTR' as well but thats it)...

Bryan got his acoustic guitar out for 'Back To You' but Mickey started shouting at him and told him to do 'Lowlife' again instead!... which was awesome once again... what a song. Even though 99% of the crowd didn't know it they were still all digging it. 'Back To You' was fun as always with the bounce and so was '69.

'Blessing In Disguise' was up next... not played that since last year... I'd thought we'd seen the last of that one but no. In the middle BA let Norm loose on a bass solo... was great to see! 'When You're Gone' was done by the winner of an auction to help people with cancer and it raised £16,000. Her friend came onstage as well and played a second set of drums alongside Mickey (below), who was helping her through the whole song. After this song a mist came in from over the hills which looked quite amazing.

'Hearts On Fire' was immense... the guitar action in the song is really something special. 'She's Only Happy'... back in the setlist, and from then on it was all familiar territory to bring us to the end. He was just about to do 'I Think About You' acoustically at the end because he started the pre-song gabble then he saw Chelsey with her banner...

...earlier on in the day we went to buy card and stuff from Sainsburys so Chelsey could write out the words to 'Crazy' so Bryan knew the words (as he said he'd try to sing it yesterday). She held up the words anyway and Bryan saw them and told her to come down infront of him (I didn't follow cos I was video-ing but Nat ram-raided her way through!) so he could give it a go like he did briefly at Derby last night. After he sang the words that Chelsey could fit onto both sides of the banner, he ad-libbed the rest and it was great. The whole crowd singing along and a great way to end the show.

I met everyone else afterwards...Chris G, Lizy, Helen, Cath, Jackie, Lidia, Jane and all the rest of the peeps... the gig finished at 10.30pm and we didn't leave the venue until 1.03am.... the small roads just couldnt cope with the volume of traffic just like the previous night. But myself, Nat, Chelsey, Mave, Bob, Zippy and Sue all passed time on quickly by drinking a few and having our own private gig.... would have been perfect there with Karl on guitar! I'm glad I went to the shows this weekend anyway... they were better than the stadium gigs last month and loads of fun. If only Ade was there too!
