23/07/06 - BIG TOP ARENA, KINGS DOCK, LIVERPOOL

Review by Jane Woodhead (Liverpool Echo):
Bryan Adams, Liverpool Summer Pops

HE summed it up perfectly: "It was great last time but tonight it was even better."

It only took one word from him in the strongest Scouse accent possible - LIVERPOOL - and the Big Top roared as you have never heard it before. There really could not have been a better act to bring the Summer Pops to a grand finale than the Canadian rocker, Bryan Adams.

He never fails to impress, whether its at the Summer Pops or before a huge crowd at the MEN Arena, Bryan will always bring the house down.

And last night was no exception with the sell out audience dancing and rocking the night away with the star. He mixed strong melodies with meaningful lyrics and the crowd certainly did not need any prompting when the time came for impromptu sing-a-longs.

There was just one brief moment when the audience showed just the slightest bit of disapproval and that was when he was looking for a willing member to join him on stage for the number he recorded with Liverpool's Melanie C, When You're Gone. Unfortunately for Liverpool he chose a young girl from London, Gemma, to join him, which did provoke a few boos from the crowd.

The 46-year-old has produced an exhausting list of albums and singles, from rock numbers to ballads and many of these were performed last night, including Everything I Do I do it for you. Bryan said it himself - you forget you are in a tent - as he switched from guitar to guitar and even played the mouth organ.

During the one-and-a-half hours he performed no fewer than 20 of his hits - and then returned for a reprise which lasted virtually 30 minutes ending on what I believe was one of the many highlights of the evening with an acoustic version of Gnarls Barclay's Crazy.

Review by Peter Grant (Daily Post):
Bryan Adams, Summer Pops, Liverpool

IT WAS the last night of the Summer Pops 06 and what a way to go out as Canada's finest singersongwriter played a stunning two-hour set.

It was a greatest hits collection and more with pencil-thin Bryan and his band, all in dark T-shirts and jeans, who ensured that this was a real going-away party where audience participation was compulsory. Bryan had two microphones set up on stage: one on the right and one on the left allowing him to run from one to the other between songs so his fans could see him.

It was a rich, faultless and diverse set delivered without any pop pomposity. (Everything I Do) I do It For You, which stayed at the top of the charts longer than any other number one, was here presented via Bryan on acoustic guitar. The crowd joined in on all the right places.

On the rockers, he was full of his usual energy, notably Cut's Like A Knife and Run To You all showing what a great grasp of melody and lyrics he has.

He came back for an encore that became an unplugged Adams concert in itself. Adams clearly loves playing the big tent. Roll on next year.

Review by Laura Cox:
Well we have just arrived home having set off at 10 am from Liverpool!! Ahh well those CDs got a good old play :-)

Arrived at the pumphouse and met up with Gill, Janet, Liz, Jackie, Rose and Gary. At long last i have finally put names to faces which was great in itself. A few drinks and a bit of banter later we were heading off to the Big Top Arena.

It felt strange not having to queue but hey no complaints from my end there. Found our way in and finally settled in our seats which were perfect for picture taking and dashing to the barrier....pass the rottweiler first though...*grrr*.

Like Liz i cannot remember the order of play but know that they opened with SFSG. Awesome. Immediately the baddies stood up....scanning around it was easy to spot them...lol.

I have to say that the show the guys put on was amazing. They really were having a ball. Keith was flicking plecs at Gary at one point, not to mention kicking over the speaker and dancing madly when SOHWSD came on.

The WYG girl was picked...unfortunately for me hubby managed to wreck my opportunity there by hysterically pointing at me.....Bryans words were "its no good pointing at your wife, i want someone with enthusiasm"...i think at this point i was like "ah well at least he spotted me" lol. Yup Bryan that was me ;-)

Well Gemma was picked and got an almighty boo from the crowd simply because she came from London. I have to say though Bryan didn't do all his moves that he normally does with the wyg girl...there was no butt wiggly though poor Gemma did try!

Only too soon did the encore come, this is where hubby managed to catch Mickeys drumstick that was flung our way :-)

(Why oh why did you sing Crazy Bryan...i just can't get that tune out of head now...lol)

All in all a good gig with loads of great tunes,Lowlife being one of them. Its great to hear a few of the old ones. Thanks Bryan and co.

I do feel though that Bryan looked a bit lost at one point probably thinking "Where are all the nutters tonight".

Just look for the majority of us nutters standing Bryan it kinda gives the game away. (I can't believe people sat glued to their chairs....unbelievable!)

Well i have waffled on a bit but i just want to say THANKS to all the baddies that i met for a fantastic night. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait to meet up with you all real soon.

One last thing, Bryan looked fit and well when i saw him *g* and was moving about that stage like a teenager. *g*

Cheers Bryan, Keith, Mickey, Gary and Norm :-)
