09/05/07 - BIRMINGHAM NEC

Review by Steven Stanley:
The journey down to the NEC was an absolute nightmare, torrential rain and no visibility at all meant I got inside the arena about 10 minutes before BA came onstage. The b-stage for this show was in the seated section so it made life difficult to get up close. All was good though as I didn't mind just enjoying the show for what it was and taking it all in.

The show started as expected ('There Will Never Be Another Tonight' on the b-stage may now be routine for regular gig goers... but it's certainly never boring!) and Bryan kicked out the first 3 songs at the back of the arena. After all this time you'd expect people to know about the b-stage... but a few lines into the first song and loads of people near the front of the mainstage were wondering what the hell was happening and where infact Bryan was singing from! I got a high five off him as he walked through the audience while singing 'The Best Of Me' and the main show kicked in. The 'This Time'/'Open Road' switcharound took another turn tonight as BA opted for the latter track... sounded great as well although he's started skipping the second verse on that track as well like he does with so many of his others.

He briefly talked about the new album and said he's got one song to finish and it should be done in a month and out by the summer... I'd say thats optimistic! 'Kids', ''69' and 'The Only Thing' really rocked the main set and were absolutely fantastic.

Surprise of the evening was a performance of 'Gimme Some Lovin'' in the encores on the mainstage... this was originally done by 'The Spencer Davis Group' and was written by Steve Winwood who hailed from Birmingham. However BA introduced the song as "this is a tribute to Birmingham's finest.... STEVIE WONDER!"... no one cottoned on though!

As 'Run To You' started to come to a close I started to head for the seated area as I knew the band were coming on to the b-stage next... I pretended I was off to the toilet and quickly dived past security, down the aisles and to the stage just in time for Bryan to come on and start singing 'There's Gonna Be Some Rockin''. For the first time in 10 months (I believe Wurzburg last July was the last time) 'C'mon Everybody' was played and it was great to see. 'I Got A Woman' was dropped tonight... but it's great to see him mixing it up. Once again, he ended acoustically with 'Straight From The Heart' and 'All For Love' on the b-stage. We quickly saw Keith afterwards and he gave Chelsey his bottle of 'Corona Extra' lager... which I gladly took a drink from!

After a nightmare journey getting there, the setlist really did treat us tonight... it just gets better. Who knows what a double-header at Wembley (including a 25th arena headline show) holds in store for us along with Sheffield. Highlight tonight was definately 'Gimme Some Lovin''.... Gary's organs to start the song along with Norm's thumping bass line, the guitar work from the boys and BA's quick raspy vocals make me wonder why they don't make this a b-stage regular. It suited him down to the ground. As the rain poured down and I was on my way home, I really was "so glad I made it!"

Review by Maria and Moya:
Review of BIRMINGHAM GIG at the NEC on Wednesday 9 May 2007

Maria:
I flew into East Midlands Airport on Tuesday 8 May (as it happens, a few hours too late to meet the man himself in North Yorkshire!!!) I didn’t realise that he had called in to see his new photographic exhibition. More of that later!!!!)

Moya met me at the airport and we drove the 40 minute drive to Rotherham where I was to stay with Moya and her family. It was around 11pm when we arrived so we had a drink and went straight to bed ready for our journey to Birmingham the next morning.

We set off at about 8.30 am, after filling the car up with petrol ready for our drive. Last time we drove to Birmingham to the NEC, two years ago, it took us forever because we were held up in a traffic jam. Not this time however, we were there in record time, just one and a half hours. This time, because of the length of time it took us to get there and back, Moya had booked us in the Crown Plaza, just two minutes walk from the Arena.

We walked into the hotel, hoping and praying that we would be allowed to check in. It was only around 10am and Moya had been told that we could not check in until 2 pm. We walked in as though we owned the place, and asked confidently if we could check in. The answer was a categoric “NO”, but after a few minutes the receptionist decided to check the computer, and hey presto! there was a room available for us. We were ecstatic and took our cases to the room and after a quick freshen up we walked through the bar area, out of the back door and headed to the arena. The receptionist had told us how to get there quickly after she was visibly shocked when we told her we were going straight to the arena to wait for the night’s concert.

On the way to the arena we tried to guess how many people would be waiting before us. We guessed at 50. To our surprise and happiness, we saw there were less than this, and when our numbers were given to us, we were 27 and 28. Although we are always sceptical about the numbering system, we were pleased and thought maybe, this time, we would get a really good place!!!!!
Moya:
Maria and I took our place and waited patiently and silently sat on a bench, which we grateful for. (We are not getting any younger you know!!!!) Time passed relatively quickly and not too many more people arrived until about 1pm. After some time, we decided to go back to the hotel, our places safe because of our numbers. We were really optimistic this time that we would have a really good place. After another freshen up and a cup of coffee we headed back to our place in the queue. We settled down once again and waited patiently. I have had a lot to say about numbering, over the years, but this time, I got the job of being a temporary numberer!!!!! I took this very seriously and panicked when my first fan joined the queue. Would they want to be numbered or not? I walked tentatively towards them and asked nervously did they want a number. I was very surprised to find that they did! They asked did the numbers work. I have to be honest, I wasn’t positive, and told them “NO”, but it would help them if they needed to leave the queue for a toilet break, or whatever. Maria commented that more people arrived whilst I had the pen, than had arrived over the last few hours. I couldn’t get rid of the pen fast enough, the responsibility was getting to me.

The afternoon didn’t drag really, Maria and I were fascinated by the amount of food consumed in one afternoon. All around us, people were eating constantly. One sandwich after another, one bag of crisps after another, one sausage after another. It was quite tiring really watching all the eating. It made me feel so hungry all the time.

MARIA

The rain started around 3pm. We decided to go back to the hotel to freshen up, comb our hair and get ready for the evening’s performance. This was all a waste of time, because after we left the hotel once again to join the queue, it p.............................oured down with rain. We began to feel like drowned rats. Our hair was stuck to our head, even though we were wearing waterproofs. Mine wasn’t too bad, but Moya was soaking. Her waterproofs “weren’t” so to speak.

Around five we were put into our numbered places. Things were looking good. Would this be the day when we got a good place? At around 5.30 we were let inside, without showing tickets, or bags, or anything. Once inside, we were separated into two queues, and we made a decision to go on the left. Things still looked good. We recognised the steward from the last time at Birmingham, when things were not so good for us, but we blotted this out of our minds, because it would be different this time. Moya asked if we could take in our small bottles of water. They told us it would be fine so long as they were plastic bottles. This was good, because we know how thirsty and hot it gets when you are jumping around like we do. When the time came to go inside the arena “proper” we went forward towards the steward confident that we would be quick because we had no bags to be searched, just clutching our tickets and our plastic bottles. To our horror, the people in front of us must have had enormous cases, because it seemed like hours whilst their bags were searched. We were becoming more and more agitated by the minute. Things were taking a turn for the worst!!!

Now it was my turn. I walked forward confidently, knowing that this would be quick. However, the steward, in her wisdom, took three attempts to put on a wrist band. A wrist band!!!! what was this for? This seemed to take ages. The right hand queue was now passing me by whilst I stood there helpless. Moya was getting more and more agitated behind me. I stepped forward, still clutching my ticket and bottle. Moya followed me after her ordeal with her wrist band and we ran to the right trying to find the way in. We were directed to the ticket steward, who once again, took forever to tear our tickets. Things were about to get worse. We rushed forward, directed by barriers to the bottle stewards, who asked for our bottles of water to be poured into a plastic glass. I looked ahead and saw “shed loads” of people stood at the front of the stage. I called out to Moya “Where have all these people come from”. Moya was in front of me at this point and when she was asked for her bottle to be poured into a plastic glass, she threw it, with force into the green bin, muttering that she hadn’t time to wait. I handed my bottle to the steward and ran after Moya.

MOYA

Once again, here I was at the right hand side of the stage next to people who had come after the numbering had stopped. I was really cross. Maria arrived next to me, also very cross. Next, came the bottle steward with a glass of water in his hand which he handed to Maria. I was shocked. He looked at me and asked me if I wanted my water, then I had to go back to him, where he would retrieve my bottle and pour it into a glass. My answer wasn’t repeatable. I told him I did not want my water, and that the whole scenario was a farce. How come, once again, Maria and I were behind everyone else. Is this a plan? Do people see us and think “How can we hold these two up”. I must have looked so angry, that the person next to Maria, told me that I didn’t look very excited. Well at that precise moment, I wasn’t!!!

After a while and a glass of wine, I did calm down and decided that, it was better to be there, than at the back anyway. We could however, have arrived at 6.30 and stood more or less where we were. We did wonder whether or not to head for the B stage, but as we couldn’t see it, we thought it wasn’t happening this time. As it turned out, the stage must have been set between the seats at the back, which we missed, because of the bottle steward incident!!!

The steward in front of us, just behind the barrier told us that Bryan would be singing “The Best of Me”, arriving from the back walking around the side and walking in front of the barrier. Later he had the set list in his hand and hid it from us, but after a while let us look at the set list. We felt important, but he showed it to everyone else as well!!!! We just needed to feel important at that moment. We were hoping that there would be some surprises on the list, but there were none. Never the less, we were excited to hear the songs, because Maria and I hadn’t been to concert since last July in Norwich. (Where we waited in the wrong line!!!!!!!)
The time went quickly, and soon the supporting band was announced. This was James Hunter. He was very good, but not everyone’s cup of tea. I personally, thought he was excellent. It did help that his saxophonist was Darren Hand from.............yes, Rotherham, my home town. The crowd showed appreciation, but it was obvious they were only there for one man and his band!

MARIA:
After the crew re-arranged the stage, the lights went down again and we heard Bryan’s voice, but we couldn’t see him. After a few moments, we realised that he was on the b stage. Although we never saw the b stage, we saw he was on it now. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER TONIGHT echoed through the arena. Fantastic as usual, an everlastic song bringing everlasting memories flooding through our minds. The NEC rocked and the concert had certainly started with a bang. Bryan went straight into CAN’T STOP THIS THING WE STARTED and PLEASE FORGIVE ME, a wonderful “oldie”now performed in full once again..................what a song! Now the number we had all been waiting for : THE BEST OF ME. Would he? or wouldn’t he? and he did! For the last few years, Moya has missed out on touching his hand, he always missed her out. This time, she made sure that she was not missed. As he went passed her, she reached out over the next person and put her hand in front of his and didn’t move it. It worked, and she was ecstatic once again, her anger and disappointment subsiding rapidly.
Bryan climbed onto the main stage and began SOMEBODY. This got everyone going, pointing as usual towards Bryan. KIDS WANNA ROCK followed. These oldies were going down a storm. At this point, Bryan reverted to a more recent song OPEN ROAD, but turned back 10 years with 18 TIL I DIE, a favourite of Moya’s. Then followed another number from this album, LETS MAKE A NIGHT TO REMEMER, slowing things down a little. Time moved forward again to BACK TO YOU, a real up tempo “bouncing” number. At this point, Moya bounced onto someone’s foot behind her, but tried to ignore the fact and carried on bouncing. (Sorry the person behind Moya!!!) Birmingham got a mention in the next song I THINK ABOUT YOU, and the crowd went mad. After a few bars of the introduction to the next song, the crowd really did go mad. SUMMER OF 69 shook Birmingham NEC. It was an unbelievable peformance. This is a song everybody knows, not just fans, just everyone!!! Bryan introduced Keith Scott and his Spanish Guitar next as he launched into HAVE YOU EVER REALLY LOVED A WOMAN. Romance was in the air once again and didn’t stop as Bryan performed his next number EVERYTHING I DO. The NEC was reaching new heights now. Time went back once again when Bryan sang CUTS LIKE A KNIFE. Now was the time for a girl in the audience to become famous. Bryan asked Lucy from Wolverhampton to come on to the stage. This was difficult, as Lucy couldn’t find her way to the stage at first, but made up for it, once she was on stage, by talking so much that Bryan stopped her. She had obviously been rehearsing, because she asked to say hello to her mother and her friends who she was sat with. Her rendition was very enthusiastic. She did all the actions of Mel C and went down a storm. Bryan was obviously very pleased and Lucy enjoyed herself very much. The next number was IT’S ONLY LOVE. Bryan mentioned that this was first performed with Tina Turner in Birmingham. It wasn’t the usual format, but once Keith began his solo performance, his expertise as an outstanding guitarist shone through once again. Romance returned with “HEAVEN” a beautiful ballad which never fails to send shivers down your spine. The last before the encore was THE ONLY THING THAT LOOKS GOOD ON ME IS YOU whipping the crowd up once more. Bryan introduced his band and left the stage, only to return to CLOUD NUMBER 9 with usual enthusiasm. A surprise followed with a cover song, GIMME SOME LOVIN. This is a real favourite and everyone seemed to enjoy it. RUN TO YOU followed, with the usual running up and down the stage by Bryan and Keith. This was great as usual. After this, Bryan and his band went to the b stage where they were received with tremendous roars. Another cover song came next with AC/DC’s THERE’S GONNA BE SOME ROCKIN, a great song, performed with enthusiasm. SEVEN NIGHTS TO ROCK came next followed by C’MON EVERYBODY and SHE’S ONLY HAPPY WHEN SHE’S DANCIN. Bryan invited his first “dancer” on to the stage, but she didn’t seem to happy to be dancin at all, but became more happy when she was joined by very enthusiastic dancers, also invited by Bryan. One lady was pregnant and Bryan asked “Let me see the baby dance”. It was a great time for all. They were really happy to shake Bryan’s hand at the end of the song. This was really fantastic. The night was coming to a close now, and Bryan slowed right down with an acoustic rendition of STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART. What a great song.........loved by all. The end was near now and Bryan asked for the crowd to help with the next song as he originally recorded it with three other people, quickly explaining that it was not three other, people, but just two others. He was of course, meaning ALL FOR LOVE, recorded with Rod Stewart and Sting (or String!) What a wonderful night, what a fantastic gig. We left feeling tired but elated by another great concert.........he never fails to make us feel energetic and full of life. We had felt sad with our places at first, but soon realised that they were excellent. Bryan spent quite a lot of time just in front of us at the microphone. We had an excellent view. It was tremendous.
During the performance Bryan mentioned that he comes from Canada, but he may move to the North of England because of all the ladies wearing short skirts and large belts even when it is p..................g it down with rain................He never alters!!! We wondered when the album would be ready, and he did explain that it would be ready in a week.........................or a month.................or maybe in the Summer. We are waiting with eagerness for this.
MOYA:
Maria and I spent Thursday relaxing and planning our day out on Friday when we were to visit Bryan’s photographic exhibition in North Yorkshire.
Friday dawned and we set off on our journey to find the elusive Nunnington Hall. We eventually arrived after about two hours. It only took us one and a half hours to reach the vicinity, but another half an hour running around looking for the Hall. Nunnington Hall is a beautiful house near Helmsley in the North of Yorkshire. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside. We walked into the house and spoke to the staff about the exhibition. They were very excited to tell us that they had met Bryan when he visited the house on Tuesday between gigs. He had driven down from Glasgow with his mother before his concert in Manchester. We found the exhibition after looking in many rooms at very old furniture and reading about ghost stories. The photographs were wonderful and we enjoyed looking at them and reading the press cuttings about the exhibition. We hadn’t seen all the photos before and Maria was surprised to see a photograh of Pilons in Germany. We listened to the comments of all the visitors and laughing when we heard one lady say
“ I don’t really know who he is................a photographer I suppose”
Everyone seemed to enjoy the exhibition. We certainly did. We read the visitors comments book and all were very positive except one from Natalie which said.
“Stick to music”
The cheek of it!!!!!!!
Our only regret was that there was no BA music playing whilst we were browsing.
We loved it anyway, What a great day. What a great couple of days. We are just waiting for Sheffield tomorrow the climax to a wonderful few days!
